Strategies that Beth Mann is leveraging (and you can too) to achieve a massive $500K in digital revenue for her small market station
There is no debating that goal setting works. It has been proven time and time again that you are more likely to achieve your goals and aspirations if you clearly define them and set timelines for achieving them.

Whether you’re looking to achieve revenue or database goals, sharing only the ambitious annual numbers can be daunting, and even discouraging.
So, start big and work backwards.
Creating manageable and achievable goals is necessary for motivating your team and keeping them on the right path. Taking the extra step to breakdown your goals by month and by week, will break those large numbers down into more bite-sized pieces.

There’s no better speaker to talk about goal setting than WKDZ’s Beth Mann. She came to the Summit two years ago and had little focus on digital then. At the time, their current goal was imprecise and undefined, ‘Do as much as you can in digital.’
Beth left the Summit focused, committed, and determined to revolutionize her team. And when Beth sets her mind to something, she succeeds. She returned to the Summit in 2015 as a speaker and left attendees with one of our favorite quotes of all time, “Set a goal that’s big enough to matter.”

The team at WKDZ is doing some amazing things. For a significantly small market (so small that their McDonald’s has only one arch), WKDZ is producing phenomenal results that every media company should aim to acheive.
In 2015, they surpassed their $250,000 revenue goal by more than $10,000. And if that’s not impressive enough, Beth’s team is doubling that this year, setting a goal of a jaw-dropping $500,000 in purely digital revenue.
While that’s definitely impressive (and it’s good to aim high), it could be easy to feel overwhelmed. But Beth has developed strategies that help keep her team focused and energized on their goal.
- Make goals front and center. You have to stay focused at all times. When you have large goals, slacking even one week will dramatically hinder your ability to achieve your goals.
- Define monthly, quarterly, and annual goals. Tracking is key to success. Make sure your entire team has clearly defined and achievable goals.
- Conduct weekly check-ins. Achieving big goals involves the entire team. At the least, you should be discussing your progress on a weekly basis.
- Create targeted and specific goals. Goals should be personalized to play to the strengths of your team.

“You don’t succeed accidentally,” is Beth’s inspiration for this year, and it’s so true. So many teams can’t figure out why they’re not hitting their annual goals. But if you ask them what they’re actively doing to achieve them, they’re not working on a weekly basis.
So, don’t let another month, week, or day pass you by. Now’s the time to sit down with your team and develop an action plan that will set you up for success.
